A dialogue between past and present
- The new and the old in architecture, design and art

Ark Journal Volume VII explores the interaction of architecture, design and art over time, looking to history as a constant source of inspiration for the development of new ideas.
We present detailed examinations of the architecture of some of the greatest masters, including an early building by Frank O. Gehry and a modest house by Marcel Breuer that is not only a home but a long-lasting lesson in good living for the youngest owners. Belgian architect Glenn Sestig discreetly transforms a radical concrete masterpiece by Ivan Van Mossevelde, while collector and designer Frederick Hooft leaves an avant-garde 1960s villa just as he found it. We visit a minimalist Scandinavian house in an untamed coastal setting and a secluded Nordic villa surrounded by nature.
In Volume VII, we draw attention to the heritage of crafts, particularly Latin American artists using materials from the past, and visit Mexico City-based studio Esrawe and online platform Unno Gallery. A special supplement is dedicated to the designer and artist Marcin Rusak and his reappraisal of history, nature and craftsmanship.
In our well-loved case studies, we span the gamut from the archaic to the avant-garde in a sculptor's extraordinary historic home, and a seaside Arne Jacobsen Pavilion is the setting for design pieces with simple lines and organic shapes.

About Ark Journal

In Ark Journal we explore the spaces around us, the objects we place in them and the people who create them. We combine architecture, design and art and show them in concert rather than as silos, and with a sense of enduring Scandinavian values and aesthetics. We celebrate good ideas, honest and inventive design and materials, and encourage critical discussion. In each issue we visit extraordinary homes around the world that are more than the sum of their parts and that express the personal stories of the people who live in them, their philosophies and influences. By placing architecture at the heart of Ark Journal, we aim to view it in the broader context of our lives, reflecting its more humanistic side and celebrating tactility and individual dimensions.
Based in Copenhagen, Ark Journal is a semi-annual magazine founded by Editor-in-Chief Mette Barfod and created by an experienced team of designers, stylists, photographers and editors. The 240-page magazine is sold in 25 countries around the world.
