In Ark Journal Volume VIII we reflect on the idea of a more fluid and holistic way of thinking and creating. We visit perfumer Barnabé Fillion from Arpa Studios in Paris, whose work is inspired by his own synesthesia and who visualizes scents as invisible landscapes. In New York, Landon Metz, an artist whose practice explores painting as a fluid meditative activity, has created an exclusive series of artworks for Ark Journal. We also present the personal memoirs of renowned New York photographer Martien Mulder. She is a minimalist whose images are sober yet warm and accessible, with photographs that reflect her travels, her movements and her life.
The houses chosen for this edition, from Los Angeles to a small town in northern Italy and from Copenhagen to Brussels, offer new perspectives on the culture of each place and the relationship of the houses to their surroundings. John Pawson's home for Michael Maharam is built entirely of mountain stone, and its livable minimalism creates a dialogue between nature, architecture and residents. Kim Rahbek Hansen's summer house on the island of Falster, designed by Terese Erngaard of the Swiss studio Diener & Diener, also tells a wonderful story about the search for the right place on the border between land and sea. Also lapped by the waves is a sauna in Helsinki that oscillates between private and public life for Finnish architect Tuomas Toivonen and Japanese designer Nene Tsuboi, creators and custodians of this contemplative yet communal sauna.

About Ark Journal

In Ark Journal we explore the spaces around us, the objects we place in them and the people who create them. We combine architecture, design and art and show them in concert rather than as silos, and with a sense of enduring Scandinavian values and aesthetics. We celebrate good ideas, honest and inventive design and materials, and encourage critical discussion. In each issue we visit extraordinary homes around the world that are more than the sum of their parts and that express the personal stories of the people who live in them, their philosophies and influences. By placing architecture at the heart of Ark Journal, we aim to view it in the broader context of our lives, reflecting its more humanistic side and celebrating tactility and individual dimensions.
Based in Copenhagen, Ark Journal is a semi-annual magazine founded by Editor-in-Chief Mette Barfod and created by an experienced team of designers, stylists, photographers and editors. The 240-page magazine is sold in 25 countries around the world.
